Signs Of Periodontal Disease

1. Bleeding Gums

If you spot blood while brushing your teeth, you may have gingivitis, the reversible precursor to gum disease. It signals severe plaque and tartar buildup in the mouth, irritating the soft tissue. Without treatment, the bleeding worsens and can also occur when eating. Bleeding can even happen on its own, indicating that gum inflammation has become severe. You might also notice redness in the area in conjunction with inflammation and excessive bleeding.

2. Receding Gums

Is plaque and tartar accumulate, they cause the tissue to pull away from the tooth roots. Gum pockets that provide convenient spaces for bacteria to collect will begin to form and make the teeth appear longer than average.

The excessive recession creates an unstable base for the roots, eventually causing teeth to loosen and fall out. A dentist may perform a deep cleaning procedure known as dental scaling and root planing to remove bacteria in gum pockets. The treatment will help prevent further recession and loose teeth.

3. Bad Breath

While everyone has bad breath sometimes, such as after consuming pungent foods, chronic cases are causes for concern. If it's an ongoing problem, you may have halitosis, which means excessive bacteria are trapped in the recessed gum tissue. Without the proper dental treatments, the bacteria remain in the gum pockets, causing further recession and loose teeth.

Unpleasant-smelling breath can also indicate a bacterial infection, such as an abscess on the tooth root. These white-colored pockets of pus form to contain the disease and prevent it from getting into the bloodstream. If an abscess leaks, it creates a foul taste in the mouth and bad breath.
